Driving lessons Broadstone, Poole

If you are taking your lessons in Broadstone you will almost certainly have to deal with the Broadstone roundabout (pictured). This roundabout has an extra exit to standard ones and very little road markings on approach to inform you of the lanes you need to be in. So you must ensure you consider one of the main roundabout rules. If you imagine this roundabout as a clock face and you are entering at what would be 6 o'clock on this roundabout clock face, if the exit you are taking is before or at 12 o'clock take the left lane, if the exit you are taking is after 12 o'clock then treat it as a right turn with right signal and in the right hand lane. One more quick point to note is that, if you are approaching the roundabout from either of the exits at the bottom of the image, and you are turning right into the exit on the right of the image. You will see that as you are passing the first of the keep clear signs, the lane leads you across to the left on the roundabout, this is slightly earlier than standard roundabout rules suggest. This is done to ensure the centre of the roundabout doesn't get blocked at busy times.

Driving Lessons Canford Heath

This aerial image of the “derby’s corner roundabout” near canford heath shows that it is not laid out like a regular roundabout. two sides have two lanes around the roundabout and the other two have three lanes. Where there are two lanes normal roundabout rules apply so I’m not going to talk about these here. Where there are three lanes spiral roundabout rules apply. This means that if you are turning right you approach the roundabout in the right hand lane signalling right, as you pass the first exit on the roundabout you check your mirrors and move to the centre lane still signalling right and as you pass the second exit you check your mirrors signal left and move to the left hand lane

Driving lessons Hamworthy, Poole

Driving lessons Hamworthy, Poole

Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Hamworthy, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with the lifting bridge in Hamworthy.

Driving Lessons Hamworthy

This is the Hamworthy lifting bridge. This is not something drivers will come across very frequently so many aren’t too sure how to deal with it. The very first thing I would like to mention is if you know you have a route that will be taking you across this bridge, check the lifting times before you leave, I won’t list them all here but generally on the half hour (at the moment). There are also signs on roads that lead to the bridge warning you if the bridge is up check these and if you know the bridge will be up, go another way. If you are approaching the bridge and the amber warning light comes on, stop if it is safe to do so. If the red lights are on you should see these from far back so it will be safe to stop you do this behind the white line before the box junction. It is also very thin going across the bridge and you must make sure the larger oncoming vehicles are leaving you enough space. If in doubt wait for the larger vehicles to come the other way before entering the bridge. If you do wait make sure it is behind the box junction. I will however also mention some pupils will tend to be a little over cautious and wait when there is enough space, if it does make you a little nervous my main piece of advice would be focus on the gap, when you are crossing the bridge be aware of but don’t look at the vehicles on the other side and focus on how much space you have on your side. This may all be irrelevant soon as the council are building a new bridge and this one may be virtually unused, but I have no doubt they will do it in there usual double quick time of about 10 years so this may be useful for a little longer yet.

Driving Lessons Canford Cliffs

This aerial image shows a cross roads onto the main Canford Cliffs high street where you have restricted view. Your view is restricted due to the bend in the road across the junction. You must take great care on this type of junction to have the car slow enough as you arrive at the junction, possibly even stopped, so you have time to see as far down the road as possible before making your decision. Use reflections in shop windows opposite to allow you to gain a further view down the major road and if absolutely necessary use peep and creep technique to ensure the road is clear, although this is usually used for occasions where your view is restricted by parked cars.

Driving lessons Oakdale, poole

Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Oakdale, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of  the most difficult junctions in Oakdale.

Driving Lessons Oakdale

Joining the Dorset way at the Oakdale junction has often caused problems for many drivers. This appears to be because there is a sharp bend before joining the slip road so no time to build up speed, after the bend there you would be directly next to the dual carriageway (with no barriers or chevrons) so people try to join the carriageway immediately without having sufficient speed. There is a simple solution to ensure you can do this safely. Although the slip road is thin, it is however really long, so long in fact I could not fit the whole thing on this image without losing image clarity. So after taking the bend, stay left and build your speed on the very long slip road this will allow you ample time to assess your mirrors and safely select an opportunity to signal and move onto the carriageway.

Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Tricketts Cross, Ferndown for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of  the most difficult roundabouts in Tricketts Cross.

Driving Lessons Tricketts Cross, Ferndown

This roundabout next to Sainsbury’s in Tricketts cross frequently causes learners to make the same mistake. When turning right from Wimborne road east (pictured top left) into Ringwood road (Pictured bottom left), the second and third exits are very far apart. Drivers frequently wait until they can see the third exit before they check mirrors, signal and move to the left. This is too late as it can often give time for a driver coming straight down ringwood road (right to left in the image) to have time to come down your left hand side and they may be thinking you will be continuing around the roundabout as you’ve signalled late. The best way to not get caught out by this is to stick to the standard roundabout rules. As you pass the exit before the one you are going to take, check your mirrors, signal and move left at that point. You don’t have to wait to see your exit before you do this.

Driving Lessons Townsend

Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Townsend, Bournemouth for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of  the most difficult roundabouts in Townsend.

Driving Lessons Townsend, Bournemouth

Here is an image of part of the cooper dean roundabout near Townsend. I would like to talk about the whole roundabout but the markings on the other side have recently been redone and Google images don’t include this yet. As I can’t afford to buy a helicopter and take the image myself I’ll just talk about this section for now. If you look at the road to the right you will see 4 lanes approaching the roundabouts. Look at the markings, 1 goes left, 2 straight and 1 right. A common error when going straight is drivers will get into the left of the 2 straight ahead lanes and as you look at it this appears to line up with the middle lane around the roundabout, so they go into that one. This would be cutting from one lane to the next, you have to consider that all traffic in the left lane is turning left so as you come onto the roundabout from the left of the 2 straight ahead lanes you will be the left most vehicle of the traffic going around the roundabout so you need to keep across to the left lane. Also beware of the box junction here. This roundabout frequently gets very blocked up and you must only enter the box junction if your exit is clear. Cars come around very fast around the roundabout and you don’t want to be blocking their exit when they do so.

Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Throop, Bournemouth for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of  the most difficult roundabouts near Throop.

Driving Lessons Throop, Bournemouth

This roundabout is opposite castle point. I would like to discuss the route along castle lane from left to right on the image. Start by looking to the far left and you will see there is 2 lanes approaching the roundabout, as you come up this road there is a sign marked through traffic at the side of the road (of course you can’t see it on this image but I mention this because if you are following the main road you are through traffic). This sign shows that as the lanes split to three near the roundabout all through traffic can use either the centre or right lanes. Always use the centre lane unless it is blocked or you are overtaking slow moving traffic. You then have to ensure that the box junction is clear before you proceed. As you go around the roundabout look closely for your lane markings (you can see in the image they are very faded), follow the centre lane and as you come around you then have another box junction to check if it’s clear to proceed. I see more drivers stop in this when their path out is blocked than I have seen stop before it. Mainly because they are coming around the roundabout too fast to react. As you continue around this you should feed to the left of the roundabout whilst checking the pedestrian crossing immediately after the roundabout is clear. A lot to deal with in a short distance so it’s very important to go slowly and carefully around this one.

Driving lessons Lilliput, Poole

Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Lilliput, Poole for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of  the most difficult junctions in Lilliput, Poole.

Driving Lessons Lilliput, Poole

This junction in Lilliput see’s two minor roads joining the major road very close together. When travelling down the major road and turning left into the second of the 2 roads you should make a very early centre and left mirror check, be very aware of what traffic is behind you, as you will need to slow down before making a left signal, if there is traffic behind you slow very early and check on the following traffic a couple more times to ensure they are keeping a safe distance, just as you pass the first of the two roads you can then apply your left signal. It is done this late to ensure any traffic emerging from this road does not think you are turning and pull out in front of you. If you are emerging from either of the minor roads take extra caution to ensure no one is giving you a misleading signal and check on any traffic emerging from the other minor road.

Driving Lessons Winton Bournemouth

Impact School of Motoring have offered driving lessons in Winton for many years. With our extensive experience we would like to give some advice to pupils on how to be safe dealing with one of  the most difficult junctions in Winton.

Driving Lessons Winton, Bournemouth

This is an aerial image of the junction known as “Winton banks” located at the Bournemouth end of Winton high street. First important point to note is check for pedestrians before you move off, many of them try to run across before traffic starts to move. If you are turning right from the high street into Alma road (pictured right), position in line with the arrow so there is enough space for a bus to come passed you in the other direction. The red car in the image is starting to move too far right. If you have to wait, stop at the start of the arrow so your bonnet is in line with the centre of the side road to ensure you don’t overshoot the junction. Also note the box junction to the bottom right of the image, many people think this is to keep the side road clear and disregard a large portion of the box junction as the 2 blue cars have in the image. In actual fact the box junction is there in case a bus stops at the bus stop opposite so traffic has space to overtake the stopped bus without causing a queue and therefore blocking up the crossroads.
